Where do chinchillas come from?
The High Andes – although numbers are decreasing drastically. They are nocturnal ‘rock hoppers’ of the Rodentia genre. The Andes can have searing temperatures during the day that drop drastically at night – hence the density of fur that a chinchilla has (60 hairs per follicle) Chinchillas are a prey animal and food for some other animals. This is where the fur is advantageous as most predators only get a mouthful of this as the chinchilla flees.
