Fruit flies are common on almost every continent, except for Antartica. Fruit flies live outside, but do enter your home upon the attraction of sugar and sustements. Flies can detect where a food source is coming from. When you open a window (Perhaps for only a few seconds), a nearby fruit fly may detect what food is in your house and enter.
