I am currently working on many automation projects which include the automation of the packing station within warehouses and distribution centres. Reduction of corrugated package size or changing the outer pack to a poly-bag is part of these processes. I understand that the major couriers are either looking into or have implemented volume/cube charges as well as their standard weight pricing. The requirement to reduce (the first of the three R’s) is ever apparent with; 1) reducing the void fill cost, 2) reduce the shipping cost, 3) material cost reduction, 4) automating traditional manual labour, 5) improving the fulfillment cycle, 6) decreasing warehouse inventory, 7) increasing order accuracy (saving time and money from having to perform the shipping transaction twice), 8) GHG & Carbon Footprint reduction, which today would be considered good corporate citizenship but in the future this could show tremendous savings.
