Where do traffic jams come from?

0

Our streets and highways were not built for 21st century traffic. Most of our streets were built in the 1930’s and 1940’s when traffic volume was much lower than today. The size of our cars is a leftover from the early days of autos, when they were conceived as family vehicles. This was in an era of one-car households. Our work schedules are a leftover from the factory jobs. We have many outdated practices that made sense when introduced. We use cars with 4-5 seats when a motorcycle which seats only 1 would do the job just as well, or a bicycle, which would work for shorter trips would make even more sense at lower cost.
