There are plenty of American fast-food imports in Britain, of course, but they aren’t quite the same as they are in the United States. There’s a certain resentment against them as representatives of all that is gross and unappealing about American culture. While I was in England, people kept talking to me about Eric Schlosser’s book, “Fast Food Nation.” They seemed quite delighted to hear that American fast-food diners are consuming fecal material in their burgers. It’s a particularly British kind of schadenfreude, to discover that another country’s food is even worse than their own.
