Pumice is formed when lava cools very quickly ABOVE ground. The vesicles or tiny holes all over are formed when heavy amounts of gas escape from the lava while cooling, leaving those air pockets. Even though it doesn’t seem like it, pumice has a glassy texture just like obsidian glass, both of which form in very similar ways.
