Where does water in a wetland come from?

Uplands are the higher parts of the landscape surrounding wetland areas. Florida’s uplands are generally the pinelands and turkey oak and scrub communities. Rainwater that runs off of uplands contributes most of the water found in wetlands, streams and lakes. Water drains down from the higher uplands to the lower wetlands, lakes and rivers, and finally to the ocean. The type and condition of the uplands influence the amount and quality of water that reaches the streams and lakes. Undeveloped uplands are uplands still in their natural state. This means that people have not yet constructed buildings or roads on them. Undeveloped uplands are very useful to man, animals and nature. The natural vegetation in these uplands slows runoff and helps to keep the soil from eroding.
