Where is Central Asia?

Posted at 11:45 AM on August 19, 2008 by Jeff Horwich Well, in the center of Asia, one would think. And that’s more or less correct. But in passing, in last week’s show, I referred to the Republic of Georgia as being in Central Asia. As a commenter points out in the previous post, I was off by the width of the Caspian Sea. The proper and best way to define the location of Georgia is probably “a nation in the Caucasus,” even though that probably does not mean much to your typically geographically-disinclined American. While the two regions are often referred to as a pair (as in “Central Asia and the Caucasus”), Central Asia really only applies to countries east of the Caspian: NPR and others have made the same error, though I imagine similarly irate notes have set them on a more accurate course from now on. This will make a nice geography lesson in our next episode, I think. ‘Bout time we all learned what the “Caucasus” really means.
