I am running apache2 on Ubuntu.  Can someone tell me where httpd.conf is that I’m supposed to edit?

Ubuntu doesn’t use httpd.conf as standard, instead global configuration stuff for apache is found in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf . You can create a httpd.conf in the apache2 directory, and load any further configuration from it by including the following line in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf

For a few releases now, the file /etc/apache2/httpd.conf file has been empty, and only present for legacy reasons. Now in 12.10, yes, it seems to be gone. Configurations are done in the subdirectories, sites-available, mods-available.
