Where is Japans Economy Going?
Dr. Sakamoto will talk about part of his current research on Japan’s ongoing economic reform. He will discuss some socioeconomic consequences of economic stagnation and reform and factors that will likely affect the direction and magnitude of reform and the shape of the Japanese economy in the nearest future. Dr. Sakamoto will also touch on the importance of domestic institutions and the structure of party competition in affecting what kind of reform by policy makers is possible. Takayuki Sakamoto is assistant professor of political science at Southern Methodist University. He studies Japanese politics and economy and the comparative political economy of industrial democracies of North America, the Pacific, and Western Europe. One of his current projects examines the nature, magnitude, and consequences of ongoing economic reforms in Japan.
