Where is the Best Bar Scene in Los Angeles, California?
I’ve been here a few times with friends, and only for drinks (they have Cider on tap!!!), but after trying the food I gotta say…don’t do it! The food wasn’t good. At all. My burger was not cooked correctly and my friends fish tasted like it was old. And to top it off we waited for almost 15 minutes before the server came back so we could tell her. The Webers of old fame, with the Crab Races, Lingerie Nights and the Tuesday nights comedian performer/world’s fastest beer drinker ‘The Fox’, of Comedy Central’s The Man Show fame, are gone. We have been here many times for the fantastic Happy Hour at the bar so we decided to try it for dinner when a friend came to town. Little did we know that Sunday is piano night! If you love show tunes then you will be singing along but if you came to have a peaceful dinner conversation you may be left yelling across the table. Dinner for 3 cost us under $100 including HH drinks ordered at the bar. (Yes you have to order at the bar to get the special drink prices, but you will save about $20 doing so!) We split the Nice Mussel entree as our appetizer and were all impressed with the amount served and the lemon white wine cream sauce was AMAZING! Ask for some bread to get up bite! The crispy roast chicken (very herby!), special of the night pasta and pistachio yellowtail was flavorful and the portions had enough for leftovers. Had dinner with my parents and my cousin tonight…I know…it is not a family restaurant. The food was ok, but my parents like the decoration, although the hallway is kind of like a maze, my FOB cousin (sorry, cousin) commented that he finally found something like the ones in Shanghai…heehee…my dad is really excited about the fact that it is quite dark inside and nobody can really see other people’s faces cleary. He has a perfect point here, you can do people watching without being noticed. Some other things that i noticed are the place smells somewhat like a temple and they have increased the price for the food and didn’t change it in the online menu. We ordered:1) Hollywood Four Stars: $18, online menu price: $15 (quite good)2) Black Cod: $19, online menu price: $17 (very good, delicious)3) Crab Legs: $29, online menu price: $23 (don’t order, doesn’t taste like have been grilled at all, taste just like the ones served in buffet, except they are warm)4) Filet Mignon 6 oz: $26
The Abbey is a solid bar, great place for night time drinks and desserts, a place to meet your friends, a quality lunch–and is downright huge, too. Despite its material success, the Abbey has kind of grown too big for its neighborhood–it took over about 4 buildings in ten years. It used to be the great little coffee house around the corner, but there is so much of it that it’s hard to describe the Abbey in a word or two. Is it a giant bar with a patio, a restaurant with a coffee shop in the front and a velvet rope or what? Definitely bring your friends from out of town. The food, staff and service are good. Prices are pretty good for WeHo and there is so much space that there are places to get lost with your friends and enjoy a good time. There is no convenient nearby parking and WeHo tickets. As an Abbey patron for over ten years, I feel it has lost some of its mojo.
