I knew that headline would catch a few eyes, but it’s true! Free dessert every Tuesday 6pm-9pm. We stopped in here for a quick bite to eat one Tuesday. One of us ordered the meatless Rueben; the other brocoli quiche. The food arrived quite rapidly, was steaming hot, and very good. The meatless Reuben had a veggie patty, heaps of sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, all on toated rye. It was nearly impossible to tell that this was vegetarian. The quiche was quite good, with a side of fresh fruit; highly recommended. When we finished up dinner, we were told that each of us could pick a FREE desert from the dessert case. Too full to eat it there, we had a piece of cheesecake and a house mouse put in boxes for later. The house mouse, in case you’re wondering is a dense piece of chocolate cake decorated to look like a mouse. Both were very good. And besides, the City Deli decor is dinerish, what more could you ask for!

I’ve been going there for about 15 years as I work near there. The Pizza is the best I’ve had in San Diego. Great Crust, great everything. The deli and grocery store is excellent too. I often go there to pick up lunch. Their sub sandwiches are also the best I’ve had in San Diego. (And there are some other darn good subs in little Italy) It starts with the bread and goes from there. The Caprese sub is terrific. That is soft mozzarella with tomato slices and fresh basil on a great Italian roll with a sprinkling of oil and balsamic vinegar dressing. For a special treat have them throw a slice or two of prosciuto on it. Unbeatable. They also have a good selection of wine, liquors and Italian style sodas
