Word on the street is that this place is owned by the men who originally owned Mojo’s Daily Grind, which used to be on Guadalupe. This was my college haunt, where I drank far too many Iced Mojos and penned some god-awful poetry about post-adolescent crushes. So it’s safe to say I miss it dearly. When I walked into Epoch, I recognized the mutated Starbuck’s sign, the wacky steel sculptures and the portrait of Mama Mojo, and the place smelled like strong coffee brewing, and they were playing Iggy Pop. I liked it instantly. The bathroom has epic graffiti with a Hell theme, the baristas are as nice as one can reasonably expect baristas to be, and they still have Iced Mojo on the menu. It was also surprisingly spacious- on the inside. The patio was pretty crammed. Advice for people thinking about opening a coffeehouse in Austin: anytime you put a cafe 10 minutes from UT and style it to attract hippies and art kids, expect smokers and plan accordingly; put in a large patio, and expect to ha
not only a good full selection book store, but a coffeehouse, a reading room, and a lecture and discussion center as well. i have whiled away hours here reading, refreshing with coffee and a pastry, and seen everyone from bob edwards from npr to tommy chong. they bring in many authors to speak and even host spike gillespie’s annual sex in public valentine’s day music and storytelling event. really a community center
A cool location with indoor and outdoor tables, walls display work by local artists … good for social stuff or just to work. Their coffee is great (the most important thing!), but they have a tasty little menu, too, with vegetarian and organic options. My favorites are the brie and apple sandwich, and the mixed greens salad with walnuts and goat cheese. Really delicious. They also make good muffins, bagels etc. if you just want to snack. The only thing to avoid, though, is the chai … it’s kind of watery and bland.Pros + Coffee, menu, patio tables
I really enjoy spending time at Dominican Joe. The coffee is excellent and they have some decent snacks available. It has an excellent atmosphere 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time I find myself staring at whatever vagrant has stumbled in to the shop. It wouldn’t be so distracting, except it seems to happen every time. And these aren’t quiet, God-fearing homeless. These are clinically insane homeless that may or may not believe they are God. There are several that are regulars, one of which likes to see how long he can take to walk down the 4 steps in the middle of the coffee shop, as if he were in slow motion. I am sympathetic to the homeless and their problems, but only to the extent that I don’t have to see or deal with them. Especially when they aren’t spending money, they’re just creaping out the patrons. Other than this, Dominican Joe is excellent.
