You can oftern get a really good rate if you use your ATM card to get money in France. You’ll need to make sure that you get a little bit of money before you get over there for first-day expenses (but avoid changing at airports if you can). You can call your bank and let them know that you’re going to France. This will let them know that fraud isn’t occurring when charges show up on your account, and they can tell you if your PIN will work (sometimes you have to set up an alternate PIN for use abroad, but personally I haven’t had to deal with that). Withdrawing money direcdtly from your account via a French ATM gets you the interbank exchange rate, but you do need to remember that there will be a service charge with each withdrawal.
