Where is the Best Steak in Albany, New York?
Bistro Zilch- How pretentious can one be? How about the “Wipe Your Feet” sign in French on the way in? It didn’t get better after we entered. We were crammed in next to another couple, so close that our conversations were now THEIR conversations, romantic- HA!)- even though the place was half empty. I understand the desire to push everybody up front to make passersby think they are doing well, however, they could have staggered us over to one of the other 5 available 2-seater tables next to us. My wife ordered a steak, medium. It came seared and raw, like tuna. I ordered the beef shortribs, and asked for no pasta, but a green veggie instead. Sorry, no substitutions, $8 for asparagus. I got four 1″x1″ cubes of beef for $32 (8 bucks a cube for you mathletes out there). The food was tasty, but the value/snotty service attitude was far from matching the price. I left hungry and unfulfilled….
This is a nice little restaurant. Service was a little slow, but we were very well treated. Went with a party of six. 5 of us had pre-ordered the Prime Rib. What we got was 10 healthy slices of prime rib on a platter, along with plenty of baked potatos and baby carrots. Enough left over for each of us to take a slice apiece home. The meat was good, but not quite as good as some of the other reviews would suggest. The person who didn’t get the rib got scallops. There were a ton of them, and they received a very good review. Desserts were (to me) the best part of our meal. We had several different ones, and the waiter even threw in a complimentary piece of cheesecake, just for us to try. They were all excellent. Definitely worth saving some room for!! Bill for 6 of us was right around $300, including tip, with no alcohol. Good place to go. Make sure you make reservations. I enjoy going to the Barnsider- it has great ambience , good value and service- but disagree that it is a great steakhouse. The steaks offered are only sirloins and filets and, while decent, are really ordinary and not as good as you can get elsewhere. No T-bone, porterhouse or ribeye on the menu and the sirloins are not particularly tasty or tender. While The Bears is very good, it’s quite a drive. Albany needs, but does not have, a good steakhouse. Jack’s has better steaks but is a seafood restaurant, not a steakhouse.Pros + ambience, good salad barCons – crowded, long waits
Tonight we went to the Raindancer for my mom’s 85th birthday dinner. There were nine of us in attendance. All the dinners were very good. The only complaint is that the salad bar needs to be updated with ideas. When you go out to dinner, you want to have something different that you would not have at home. The carrot salad tasted somewhat musty, but everything else was okay, just a little boring. The main course meals ordered: Prime rib, Ahi Tuna with Rasberry Sauce, Lobster, Filet Mignon were are perfect and outstanding. Service was very professional and friendly and fast – Thanks “Meghan for a great job!”- Dessert – Hot Fudge Cake, Coconut Cream Pie, Cookie Dough Cheesecake, Creme De Menthe sundae, and Strawberry Shortcake – EXCELLENT – and we all usually don’t order desserts.
