Management has done a good job of making this place into a quality restaurant. The food has improved a LOT since when it first opened. Friendly waitstaff and nice ambiance. I love the fact that they have rooms that accommodate parties. Pros + Fresh fish and unique rollsCons – It’s in Escondido

About two years ago I left my phone at home on accident and after a late yoga class was trying to call at a payphone across the street to see if anyone would join me for dinner. No responses but I noticed a sushi bar across the street still open at 10:30pm. I decided to eat and luckily wandered into the best sushi spot in San Diego. It wasn’t too crowded on the weeknight late hour which made me a little nervous at first, but the friendly staff/chefs made me feel comfortable right away. I ordered my usual favorite rolls which were of the best quality and presentation I had seen. These days I eat at Ebisu at least once a week and have made friends with the entire staff. I’ve had almost everything on the menu and then some! I keep coming and rarely go anywhere else mostly because the sushi is the best, but almost equally important is the friendliness and efficiency of the staff, the nice atmosphere/music, and the late hours they stay open. The prices reflect the quality of the fo

I first went to RA in Tempe, AZ on Mill Ave and had the best time ever. I was visiting my friend Colleen (she’s from NY and I trust her taste implicitly) and she swore by their happy hour. The place was packed (with mostly attractive people, always a plus to have some eye candy), but the service was still excellent (and of course we got sauced). I had a similar experience in SD, as with AZ the happy hour had a few more options than most sushi spots (i mean how many california rolls can one girl eat?) and the service was fantastic. I have found a few more places with better sushi, but for happy hour I totally recommend checking out RA (pinapple wontons are a must, yum!). Pros + great happy hour, friendly staffCons – the music can be a bit loud (if you’re adverse to that sort of thing)

My friend and I are always looking for new happy hour spots in San Diego. She suggested Cafe Japengo. We went for happy hour on a Thursday and sat in the bar. The crowd was good, wait staff friendly and decor nice. We didn’t make it by 7pm and missed out on the food and beverage discount. We tried again a few weeks later on a Wednesday and I wish I never had. We ordered the calamari, spicy tuna roll and a couple of drinks. After we ate, we were ready to order a couple more drinks before 7pm rolled around, but the waitress handed us our bill basically cutting us off. Then I went home thinking all was good, but I found myself hovering over the toilet around midnight. I talked to my friend the next day and she said she threw up also. My guess is they use left over fish for the happy hour rolls, because our spicy tuna roll was mashed up and not sashimi grade fish. Needless to say, I will not return.Pros + Decor, peopleCons – Bad Happy Hour sushi, parking

After inquiring about our status on the wait list after the given 30 minutes, we were told that our party had already been sat. When we explained to the hostess that we were still waiting outside where we said we would be, we were told that they were very busy and suggested that we try another restaurant for dinner. We walked down the street to Jack’s for sushi and after explaining what had happened to us at Sushi on the Rock, we were promptly seated in a private area, given a free bottle of sake, and two free sushi sampler platters. they wanted to show us how sushi was done right and they definitely did!
