Where is the Best Upscale Casual Dining in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania?

This read so well that I could not resist stealing a section of it & posting it here. + Vegetarian Food in Philadelphia at Horizons By Judy Barr Excerpt – So just what is this vegan palace of delights? To begin with, it’s on the shady side past South Street, up a flight of stairs in Ikea beige and bleached blonde floors and straight on to goodness. The reservation was discreetly checked, coats were collected, and the party allowed to slump into comfortably upholstered chairs in a room that could double as a yoga zone or casual modern art gallery. One face at the table beamed, wide eyes blinking, as if arriving at a sort of mecca. The staunch carnivore offered to gnaw my arm, proclaiming that “Meat is my Jesus!” Horizons is like “Pimp My Haffner” gone decadent. For one thing, dining halls don’t usually offer pomegranate sangria. It arrives on a tray, zesty from an orange garnish and sweet from the sliced fresh grapes mamboing among the ice cubes. I mean, I could f

When reserving, (from out of state, over a month’s advance), I CLEARLY STATED, SEVERAL TIMES, that this would be my parent’s 50th anniversary dinner. He said he wrote it down. They didn’t wish my parents Happy Anniversary!?! Our waiter DID remember to wish Happy Birthday to the woman at the next table. Maybe they got his attention with their pink boas. Maybe the gifts on our table, wrapped in silver & gold paper, being opened by 70-ish folks, me wearing a tux with gold tie, and ADVANCE NOTICE THAT THIS WOULD BE A 50TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER…AS IN ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME SPECIAL OCCASION wasn’t obvious enough. I don’t think that common courtesy needs requesting. The server AND hostess dropped the ball on this detail. If acknowledged like ” On behalf of all of us at Varalli’s, congratulations on your 50th Anniversary”, I’d be TOTALLY raving about our experience. Pros + Food , Service, AmbienceCons – Attention to details.

We were delighted to be able to try out Chloe with out-of-town guests Saturday night. Our game plan on the busiest Saturday in Philly (convention, World Series game, Penn Family weekend) was to dine early-we were a party of 5. Raining and miserable outside, the candlelit charm of Chloe was very inviting. The decor is warm and cozy. What was not so inviting was the surly hostess that would not seat us until the group member parking the car showed up (even after we stopped by the restaurant to inquire about a group of 5 before we picked up our out-of-town guests at their hotel.) Yet, while dining, I noticed a couple seated at a table of 4 alone for a bit until their dining mates eventually joined them. They must be regulars. On a high note, our waitress was terrific (dressed in her Utley Phillies shirt) and made up for the sourness of the hostess. As to the food, our appetizers and desserts were absolutely delicious – a melange of salads, oysters, and a shrimp dish started off th

After trying to get reservations here for 2 weeks, I finally got a table. The place is so cute and well decorated, so it made a great first impression. Not to mention we were greeted by very friendly staff. The menu looked great, I had a pork chop special that I was told used to be on the menu- IT WAS SO GOOD! My dining partner had the rigatoni bolognese, which was also very good. But I think that my pork chop was honestly the best pork chop I have ever tasted- ever. For dessert we had the banana bread pudding- very yummy. My date and I were the last people to leave the restaurant, and instead of being rushed out, we chatted for about an hour with the owners and staff. It was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. I would recommend this place to anyone for the great food and also the exceptional service. Pros + Decor, Food, BYOB
