The Polish School of Medicine Historical Collection was established in 1986 and was one of the initiatives marking the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Polish School of Medicine. The late Dr Wiktor Tomaszewski, a former member of staff at the Polish School of Medicine and a much loved and revered Edinburgh general medical practitioner, was the main driving force behind this initiative. The Collection contains medals of medical interest, wartime memorabilia, artefacts, books about the Polish School of Medicine, photographs, paintings and sculptures. Many of the exhibits were gifts to the University from Polish Medical Academies, grateful former students, staff and graduates of the Polish School of Medicine and Dr Tomaszewski himself. The Collection was originally housed in the Polish Room, a lower ground floor committee room in The University of Edinburgh’s Erskine Medical Library in George Square.
