The US is located on the North American continent in the western hemisphere. Its political relationships with other countries significantly depend on its geography. The US and Canada are very close allies, trade significantly with one another, and often take in immigrants from each other’s country. The US has a strained relationship with Mexico because of illegal immigration, but still has a close trading relationship because of free trade agreements. Cuba, being a communist country close to its own borders and in its hemisphere, affects the US greatly. Presidents since Eisenhower and Kennedy have been wondering what to do with the Castro problem. In its political history, the United States emphasized the importance of keeping European interests and affairs out of the western hemisphere (Monroe Doctrine).
