The Pledge of Allegiance to the United States was composed by Francis Bellamy in1892. It was published in a children’s magazine called "The Youth’s Companion" in the Sept. 8th issue celebrating the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s discovery of America. After a proclamation by President Benjamin Harrison, the Pledge of Allegiance was first used on Oct. 12, 1892. Bellamy thought that the pledge and the involvement of kids around the nation would be a great example of national solidarity.
