Buying from a leading, venerable and reputable dealer is generally the easiest way of purchasing work by well respected artists. If you are interested in purchasing the work of a notable living artist you will usually find that the price that the artists primary dealer charges and the price of purchasing a work directly from that artists studio will be essentially the same as most notable artists are not going to undercut their dealer (it is considered a very poor business practice in the art world). If you do decide to purchase from a dealer, make sure that the dealer you are purchasing from officially represents the artist whose work you are interested in purchasing. If you are working the artists primary dealer you should always be able to make a request to meet the artist. Of course I am speaking of leading artists (rapidly emerging and well established) where in most cases the artist has a strong relationship with their dealer[s].
