Wheres the risk in Mrs Cables tapestry needle?
In the past week, I have had letters from two constituents detailing their exasperating experiences with Criminal Records Bureau checks. For 30 years, one lady has been delivering library books and videos to the housebound – ill or elderly people – as a volunteer. She hands over the books at the door to a dozen or so clients a month. She is now told that because she may be in contact with ‘vulnerable adults’ she has to submit to a check. Another lady is a school governor, in which capacity she is never alone with children or in charge of them. But someone has decreed that she has to be checked. Her son wants to be a trainee sports teacher and is getting experience by helping out in a school and coaching youth rugby teams. For each activity he requires a separate record check. The endless checking is costly for the individuals, an unnecessary intrusion and a vast waste of resources at a time when public services are squeezed.
