That was the message delivered by Dr. Brett Fischer during Thursday morning’s Project Extra Mile Dodge County Coalition meeting at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont. Fischer, an orthopedic surgeon at Heartland Orthopedic and Sports Medicine, presented a number of facts to people at the meeting. Fischer cited a study where 60 percent of high school athletes reported using alcohol. In the same study, 48 percent of varsity captains said that they drink. That, Fischer said, sets a poor example. “The younger kids look to the older kids and follow their examples,” Fischer said. Fischer also pointed to some of the effects alcohol can have on athletes.
