Which aspects of employment are covered by law in the uk?

Not only the things mentioned in the first answer, such as discrimination, but things like the right to retain your job if you are pregnant, leave if you are about to become a father, a right to (unpaid) leave for “emergency family care” (ie looking after children who are ill or unexpectedly off school), a right to a minimum standard of employment contract, spelling out things like period of notice you must give to terminate, period of notice employer must give of termination or variation of terms, right of young workers to work in conditions which does not interfere with education, disciplinary procedures (warnings, verbal and written), and these must be included in a contract. If they aren’t, or if there is no written contract, the law presumes a standard contract as written in the Employment Rights Act. There are also other rights like the working time directive, EU legislation which allows a worker to refuse to be forced to work more than 40 hours per week, unless the job is exempt
