I suppose you are looking for the “Catholic Church” answer. I’m Baptist, so I have no reason to defend the Catholic Church, and I’ve contemplated this before and I don’t really think you can hold the Catholic Church from 1000 years ago to the same moral standards we consider common place today. Don’t get me wrong, some of the things they did were brutal, but at the same time you have to keep everything in perspective. Everybody, every religion, every nation, every place on earth, one thousand years ago was was horrible when compared to the world we live in today. There was no place on earth where people were safe, or who had any kind of rights. It simply didn’t exist. So the question I think you really have to ask is “were the people (hundreds of years ago during the middle ages) better or worse off due to the Catholic church? In my opinion, they were better off, despite the atrocities of the church. The Catholic church helped by giving some kind of moral standard to otherwise ruthless
