I’m sure their views are more complex than an “aye” or “no,” but here’s what I can tell you in the space I have. Mayor John Dickert included the carts in his budget proposal last October, and it stayed there. At the Nov. 17 City Council meeting where the budget was approved, aldermen Sandy Weidner and Jim Kaplan each proposed alternatives to cut out the carts and the accompanying $10 fee. Both were voted down. Weidner asked to use property taxes instead to cover the excess garbage-dumping fees the state imposed. That would’ve cost a typical taxpayer about $5. Minutes from the meeting show Aldermen Michael Shields and Kaplan voted along with her. Kaplan’s amendment would’ve taken the garbage fees out of reserve funds. Aldermen Aron Wisneski, Weidner and Shields voted with him, according to the meeting minutes.
