Which countries did the USSR control during the Cold War?

0

The USSR (Russia) controlled Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikstan, Kyrgyzstan, Eastern (not Western) Germany, Poland, Austria, Hungary, and basically MOST of Eastern Europe (eg. the Balkan nations etc etc which were previously ruled under Communism).. However, Yugoslavia (in 1948) and Albania (in 1961) eventually fell out with the USSR and sought closer relations to the West (i.e. Soviet enemies). The only non-communist Balkan countries during the cold war period were Greece and Turkey who had joined forces with NATO and the West, and hence were NOT controlled by the USSR. Hope this helps…

Effectively, the USSR really only controlled the countries that touched its borders. This was the majority of Eastern Europe… This was because these countries were within marching distance from the Red Army…
