An Oyster card doesn’t expire. My mum keeps hers up in Aberdeen and tops it up when she comes to visit me. If you are not thinking of coming for another 5 years though try to keep your balance low as they company which makes them has not been giving a renewed contract and so the cards themselves may be changing in a year or so. They are great as you just tap them on the reader rather than having to show the bus driver the date or having to feed it through the tube thing. However if you plan on using a lot of rail rather than tube lines during your visit you are better with a travelcard as you can use these within the zones on the rail but not the pay as you go oyster. There are a few chosen stations which do allow pay as you go oyster but not many. If you’re planning on being in Central London only then an Oyster is your best bet as you’d have to buy a travelcard every day after 9:30 to avoid being charged the peak fare.
