First off, there is no “conventional” engine. I assume you mean Inline, as the inline-4 is the most common engine around at the moment. Rotaries are not the best at sealing the conbustion chamber, though the current RX-8’s Renesis is a huge improvement over the 13B in the old RX-7, which is vastly better than the 12B in the first-gen RX-7. As a result, their fuel economy is relatively poor. OTOH, a 1.3-liter two-rotor rotary is the equivalent of a 2.6-liter V-6, so it’s not as bad as you’d think. As for the other engine types, the cylinder layout by itself doesn’t affect fuel efficiency.
