There is no one answer to this question. It depends on your dog and their needs. Some dogs with huge appetites do better on a food with lower calories/higher fiber/lower fat, some dogs with very high energy or working dogs will need a high fat/high calorie food. Some dogs with skin problems will do better on a food with higher amounts of fatty acids. Etc. You want to avoid the obvious bad junk, like Ol’Roy, Beneful, Pedigree, Gravy Train, Alpo, and that sort of thing. Foods like Iams, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Purina ONE, Pro Plan, and similar lines are very good. Many folks prefer the ‘super-premium’ brands such as Innova, Merrick, Chicken Soup, and so on. Other people feed home cooked meals or raw. Any food that carries an AAFCO statement is considered at least minimal complete nutrition; the feeding trial statement is much preferred, but most only say ‘formulated to meet AAFCO standards’.
