Which is the best software to work with 3d images and animation?

As the guy said above me, maya and 3ds max are both well known programs with lots of support and tutorials available, but these arent the only excellent 3d packages about. Other very good software includes XSI, Houdini, Lightwave, Cinema 4D and Blender (blender is actually freeware! unlike the rest which range from hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands of dollars), however all of these programs are not easy to use or learn and can be overfacing at the very least – you didnt mention whether you are new to 3D, but ill assume you are, if you are looking to learn one of these programs, then google around and follow as many of the tutorials you can find, if your just looking for a fun easy way to play about with some 3d models and simple animations then Daz3D or Poser might be a better option.
