Chain is sold in grades. Grade 70 or *Proof coil chain is some of the strongest chain sold, but the chain is only as strong as the weakest link or most of the time the padlock. Master Lock makes several padlocks where the shackle is almost entirely protected which makes it almost impossible to cut it with bolt cutters. Today’s thieves are using battery powered cut off tools to cut chain and locks off. They are quiet and quick. Try and purchase the largest diameter chain that you feel comfortable using. 3/8″ proof coil chain would take a hefty set of bolt cutters to cut through, most hardware stores will sell it by the foot.
