Which job has the highest turnover rate, Customs Officer or Probation Officer?
4.9% for Customs http://www.cbp.gov/xp/CustomsToday/2002/… The other question is much more difficult to answer as there are many different types of probation officers. You have federal, state and county PO’s. And as a PO I have worked for just 2 departments. The first was great and I loved my job, the second was a nightmare and I left it as soon as I could. However, it seems that about 19% is the norm for probation officers. http://www.
When I went thru probation officer certification in Texas many years ago – I was told that the turnover rate in Texas for probation officers was about 40% for the first 2 years that someone is an officer, and then up to 60% at 5 years. So, I guess that out of 100 people, only 40 of them (on average) would remain as a probation officer after 5 years (in Texas). Now – part of this depends on where you work at. When I first started as a probation officer, I was surprised at these numbers and didn’t quite understand why the #’s were so high. I then switched departments and I went to work for 2 larger counties (Dallas County, and another larger department). THEN I understood why the turn over rate is so high. I am now back in the district where I started at (just at a different office). And, I am much happier.
