I’m also a big fan of XviD and in general it will result in smaller sizes than H.264, however compression artifacts are still generally noticeable. XviD also has the advantage of being free. Using higher resolutions and higher bitrates with XviD files allows you to achieve near-DVD quality, but the size of the files increases significantly and it also uses up considerable system resources. So if you really want to achieve the best size to quality ratio, in my opinion, H.264 does the best job.
