Which novels haven stood the test of time?”
I read Crime and Punishment voluntarily in college. My boyfriend at the time had to read it for a class and it sounded interesting so I picked it up one day and started it. I loved it. I loved the language, the imagery, the tension of the plot, and Rasknalnikov’s dilemma. A few years later I tried to read it again. I just couldn’t get into it. I don’t think I got even as far as the initial murder scene. I have no explanation for this, given how much I loved it the first time through. It’s possible while I was in college my reading “style” was different. I was an English major and being trained to read deliberately and critically. Now I just read for pleasure so perhaps I’m less tolerant of the parts that aren’t pleasurable. Or maybe I was just trying to impress my boyfriend. Maybe I’ll give it another try, if my copy survived our last move. I don’t usually reread favorite books. I frequently don’t find them as wonderful the second time through. But I do watch favorite movies over and o
