Naming a tv sitcom ‘Bored to Death’ is playing with fire. And in this new HBO gamble, the creators get burned because this is a show that lives up to its unfortunate name. Jason Schwarzman (I Heart Huckabees, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Marie Atoinette) plays Jonathan, a struggling New York City writer who tries to imitate a tragicomic Woody Allen character from the days when Woody Allen himself played the Woody Allen character in his movies. Resembling an earnest clean-cut college English major, Jonathan is also supposed to be a pothead and an alcoholic, which is why his girlfriend moves out in the premiere show’s opening scene. But as she drives off with two Israeli movers who have confirmed Jonathan’s status as “a self-hating New York Jew”, he doesn’t hit the bottle or the bong – or even his typewriter.
