top In his book Tree-Ring Dating and Archaeology (Chicago 1982), the famous Irish dendrochronologist M. G. L. Baillie, when talking about the correlation between ring sequences and the statistical methods used for dating them, says that he is not completely satisfied with the CROS program he used, even though he admits that its shortcomings are compensated by its capacity to find matchings, which however must be confirmed visually. In the note on page 91, Baillie says: “It might be asked why a “better” program has not been written which matches on year-to-year detail, trends, etc. One possibility is that when all relevant reference chronologies are under control, well replicated, etc., there may be room for enhanced programs which will compare individual ring patterns with the reference chronologies in a number of ways-for example checking year-to-year details, trends and signatures”.
