Friday marked Lou Royal’s 44th year selling her homemade fudge, potato and strawberry candy at the annual Appalachian Festival Arts & Crafts Fair — itself in its 45th year. “I have been doing this since the second year,” Royal said. “I missed the fair’s very first year … but I have been here every year since.” The three-day event opened Friday at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center and will continue today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. When asked what keeps her coming back every year, Royal answered, “Well, I just love it. I like to make the candy and I like to meet the people out here. Everyone is so nice and I get to see people here that I only see once a year.” The arts and crafts show is sponsored by the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce. Chamber president Ellen Taylor said, “It’s been a good, steady crowd out here today. The people selling tickets out front said it was really, really busy.
