Who and what is the ICJ?
We are a group of up to 60 senior lawyers, from around the world and representing all the legal professions, and we use our legal expertise to protect and promote human rights. All of us have made a special contribution to the defence of human rights either in our home countries or internationally. As Commissioners, we set the organisational policy which is then implemented by the International Secretariat based in Geneva. Meet the Commissioners Why the International Commission of “Jurists” We chose the term “Jurists” to include all persons trained in law and whose profession is primarily concerned with the law. It includes judges, attorneys (in some countries divided into solicitors and barristers), law professors, legal advisers, etc. The general word “lawyer” could have been used, but might have been interpreted by some as excluding judges, academics and advisers.
