The largest retailer of men's clothing in the UK by turnover is Marks and Spencer; the company was founded in Leeds in 1894. The largest retailer by volume is ASDA founded in 1965 in Yorkshire; the company is a subsidiary of Wal-Mart the American based largest retailer in the world, and its range of items includes along with clothes, food products as well as grocery items and general merchandise; the company was purchased by Wal-Mart in July 1999. Marks and Spencer have over 400 stores spread throughout the UK while ASDA has 340 stores. Marks and Spencer deals more in retail clothing along with a growing presence in the food retailing business. The total number of employees working for Marks and Spencer is 70,550 while ASDA has 150,000 employees.
