Who cannot use freeway HOV lanes?
• People driving alone, except as noted in the exceptions section above. • Solo drivers who are passing another vehicle in the adjacent general purpose lane. • Solo drivers in hybrid or other green vehicles. • Trucks which weigh more than 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. • Vehicles pulling a trailer when the total weight of both vehicles is more than 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, or when the combo is unable to keep up with the flow of traffic in the HOV lane. Gross vehicle weight means the maximum allowable total weight of a road vehicle or trailer when loaded, including the weight of the vehicle itself plus fuel, passengers, cargo, and trailer tongue weight. Vehicles in the HOV lanes during operating hours without the required number of people, or trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, are subject to a $124 fine from the Washington State Patrol.
