Anyone hiring a builder or buying a house should care. The truth behind the construction nail begins a long time ago in the 70’s. Nails are an issue that is literally hammered out of sight. In 1963 when a builder hired a framing contractor to erect the frame of a new house it was understood that the builder supplied the materials. This meant the wood, flashing and of course the nails. When the influx of hispanic workers started they got work with builders by saying they would supply the nails. So you have a builder seeing a way to save on his construction cost and many jumped at the chance. Now motivated with a new contract to build at the lowest cost the absolute cheapest nails were used. The nail issue was overlooked because sales and brick covered up the weakness. These hispanic crews changed the industry.
