It was the largest war the world had yet seen. Causes World War I was immediately precipitated by the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist in 1914. There were, however, many factors that had led toward war. Prominent causes were the imperialistic, territorial, and economic rivalries that had been intensifying from the late 19th cent., particularly among Germany, France, Great Britain, Russia, and Austria-Hungary. Of equal importance was the rampant spirit of nationalism, especially unsettling in the empire of Austria-Hungary and perhaps also in France.
America’s policy of insisting on neutral rights while also trying to broker a peace resulted in tensions with both Berlin and London. When a German U-boat sank the Lusitania in 1915, a large passenger liner with 128 Americans aboard, Wilson vowed “America was too proud to fight,” and demanded an end to attacks on passenger ships. Germany complied. Wilson tried to mediate a compromise settlement; yet no compromise was discovered. Wilson also repeatedly warned that America would not tolerate unrestricted submarine warfare because it violated America’s rights. Wilson was under great pressure from former president Teddy Roosevelt, who denounced German “piracy” and Wilson’s cowardice. In January 1917 the Germans announced they would resume unrestricted submarine warfare. Berlin’s proposal to Mexico to join the war as Germany’s ally against the U.S. was exposed in February, angering American opinion. (see Zimmermann Telegram). In world war one we fought Germany… It was considered a world war because most of the world was involved. German declared war on russia first, then i think it was france… Either way there were two sets or teams or whatever u call them with countries combied they were called the allies and the central powers. I believe in World war 2 they were called the allies and axis.
