Nobody ‘fiddled’ as the fiddle hadn’t been invented, but the story is that Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Tacitus reports a rumour that Nero stood on stage while the fire was raging and recited a poem comparing Rome to the fall of Troy…quite likely considering Nero’s theatrical personality!
