As I understood it. Ho Chi Minh led a rebellion against the French that resulted in their capitulation following a decisive victory over the French at Dien Bein Phu in 1954. Ho seems to have been influenced by Chinas Chang Ki Chek and he embrace of communism after WW2. Not all chose to follow Ho as president of the single party Democratic Republic of Viet Nam and established their own government under Ngo Dinh Diem. After the Geneva accords didn’t work Viet Nam was devided into the northern and southern zones the people could go to which ever side they chose in the 300 day free period. Mostly Catholics went south and the communists went north. The United States got involved as nothing more than an advisory capacity. When the United States “imperialist, capitolist aggressors” became involved naturally China, “protector of the people” HAD to get involved the Russia couldn’t let the amature socilists from China out do them.
