Mr. Syms was born in Brooklyn, the son of a menswear retailer. After serving in the army, he attended New York University and studied broadcasting. He spent two years as a sportscaster in Maryland and West Virginia before returning to New York to join his brother in the family retail business. In the early 1960’s, Mr. Syms was deeply involved in politics and ran for City Council of Yonkers. He left the family business in 1960 and he and a partner opened a store on busy Cortland Street. In 1968, Mr. Syms bought out his partner and today, Syms Corp. operates 45 stores in 16 states. The company’s tag line, “An Educated Consumer is our Best Customer” was conceived by Mr. Syms and after two decades, still stands as an outstanding example of successful retail advertising.
