believe it or not a lot of the western state still have home steading act on the books.I see it advertised often in magazines.I live in Idaho And I know you can still buy property from the state for about a buck an acre.Minimum to buy is 5 acres. Its in wilderness areas, and there are certain criterea you have to follow to make it yours. If you do this Don.t let the locals know where from .if your from california,You won’t get a good welcome. These folks have moved into some of the rural areas and tryed to change things, have raised hate and discontent with some of the local farmers and ranchers. Things have went as far as there homes being burnt down.Sad but true.Alot of the southwestern states have land you can aquire for little or nothing.Search for homestead rights in the states your interested in. You may be suprised at what you find.

LMAO at “Clark.” I just moved from Blackfoot Idaho. I lived between Acme, and Blackfoot. Buy land for $1 an acre from the state? Oh pleeeaaaze. What a load of B.S. There is not a single state that has current homesteading laws on the books anymore. Every once in a while Alaska, or Montana open up a tiny bit of land. They are always flooded with thousands of requests for the land. Problem is the people have to live there for five consecutive years, and make improvements, including building a LEGAL home (not some uni-bomber shack). In order to build a legal home meeting all codes you would need to be independently wealthy. How else will you buy the supplies to build your home, put in septic, and support yourself? As for your “skills,” if you truely wanted a lifestyle of freedom, you would find a way on your own. You would be building porches, chicken coops, garages, re-roofing houses….what-ever you needed to do as a skilled carpenter to make money. My husband’s best friend is a master
