French inventor Gabriel Voisin first invented anti-lock brakes for aircraft in 1929. The system did not see widespread use on automobiles until Chrysler and the Bendix Corporation developed the Sure Brake system for the 1971 Chrysler Imperial. Bosch and Daimler-Benz followed suit in 1978 with the first 4-wheel ABS system for automobiles.
