Who invented land surveying?
Surveying has been around for thousands of years, as long as recorded history. It is an essential element of building, both in the planning and construction stages. It was used in the building of the most ancient monuments on the earth today such as the pyramids (2700 BCE) and Stonehenge (2500 BCE). Land surveying was an established profession in ancient Rome and Egypt. It was used to locate farm parcels in ancient Egypt as early as 3000 BCE after the annual flooding of the Nile would wipe out property boundaries. Its invention cannot be attributed to a single source or date.
