Who is a Candidate for Artificial Insemination?
Couples who have unexplained infertility are often candidates for artificial insemination. Directly placing sperm into the reproductive tract, in combination with hormone drugs to increase egg production, greatly increases chances of pregnancy in many couples. Artificial insemination is also a solution for: • Women who have no male partner but who want to conceive a baby with donor sperm. • Women who have cervical problems that prevent sperm from traveling through the cervix. • Men who have a low sperm count, or who are sterile or have genetic conditions they don’t want to pass along to their children. How Artificial Insemination Works There are two main types of artificial insemination: Intrauterine, in which the sperm is placed into the uterus during ovulation, and intracervical, in which the sperm is placed into the cervix.
